Loaded Tuna Salad: A Flavorful, Protein-Packed Meal
DISCLAIMER: I'm not a medical doctor or licensed/certified nutritionist. I'm just a lady who likes to research, experiment in the kitchen, and figure out what works for me. The information shared here isn't a prescription or medical advice. It may or may not be helpful for you, but hopefully it's inspiring, entertaining…and provides some food for thought.

As I've shared before, I love hotch potch and mix-and-match type of dishes because you get EVERYTHING all in one and all at once. It's so convenient and efficient. Naturally, I'm gonna love a customizable dish with a bit of this and bit of that. And you can make this your own. This is just the system and framework, but you can tweak and change the ingredients to you liking!
Sometimes you just need to throw some stuff in a bowl and see what happens. Experiment. That's what cooking's all about for me. Get in the kitchen and see what happens. That's basically how this tuna salad came together.
I wanted something filling, nutritious, flavorful and relatively easy to put together, so I grabbed some tuna and started building. A little onion here. Some dill there. Mustard. Cilantro. Spices. Greek yogurt. And then I started getting a little experimental. Because why not?
The result was this creamy, savory tuna salad with a little sweetness and tang from roasted tomatoes (or sun dried tomatoes in oil) and an unexpected boost of texture and flavor from imitation crab.
And yes, I put a dash of cinnamon in it. Listen. 😂
Why This Tuna Salad Is Everything
I like meals that don't require me to reinvent the wheel every time I'm hungry. Tuna salad is one of those meals. It's easy to customize, easy to make ahead, and you can change the flavor profile depending on whatever you have hanging around in the refrigerator.
This particular version has a few things going for it:
It's protein-forward. Tuna, nonfat Greek yogurt and imitation crab give this salad several sources of protein.
It features fiber. The chickpeas are a great source of fiber.
It's creamy without relying entirely on mayonnaise. I use plain Greek yogurt as one of the creamy bases.
It has a LOT of flavor. We're not doing bland tuna over here. Dill, cilantro, mustard, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder and other seasonings give this thing some personality.
It's customizable. Don't like cilantro? Leave it out. Want more crunch? Add more onion. Prefer mayonnaise instead of Greek yogurt? Do your thing.
It's an easy meal-prep option. Make a batch and you've got something ready to throw into a wrap, onto greens, with crackers or straight onto a fork.
Tuna Salad Recipe Ingredients
Here are the staples I used in my version. The seasonings are intentionally flexible because I am very much a "season until it tastes right" kind of cook.
The Base
1–2 cans albacore tuna in water, drained
½–1 can imitation crab meat
Chickpeas, to your preference
½ red onion, chopped
Sweet pickle relish, to taste
Plain nonfat Greek yogurt, to desired creaminess
Mayonnaise, to desired creaminess
Seasonings & Flavor
Rosemary — ¼ teaspoon
Dill — ¼ teaspoon
Cilantro — ¼ teaspoon
Dried mustard — ¼ teaspoon
Paprika — ¼ teaspoon
Turmeric — ¼ teaspoon
Garlic powder — 1 teaspoon
Nutritional yeast — 1 tablespoon
Cinnamon — a dash or sprinkle
Red pepper flakes — a sprinkle
Salt — to taste
Black pepper — to taste
Spicy or brown mustard — 1 teaspoon
Lemon juice — a squeeze
The Extras
Sun-dried or roasted tomatoes — 1–2 tablespoons
Seaweed, chopped or torn into small pieces
Clancy's Jalapeño Kettle Chips, to taste
A note about the measurements...
I didn't measure every seasoning in the video because, well...I was cooking. 😂
For a starting point, I'd suggest ½ teaspoon of the dry seasonings per can of tuna, then tasting and adjusting from there. For the stronger ingredients like mustard, dill, cilantro and cinnamon, start smaller and build. The beauty of tuna salad is that you can taste as you go.
Tuna Salad Recipe Instructions
Prepare your tuna. Drain 1–2 cans of albacore tuna in water and add it to a large mixing bowl.
Add your chickpeas. Add as many or as few as you'd like. You can leave them whole or lightly mash some of them into the mixture for additional texture.
Add the vegetables and extras. Mix in your chopped red onion, sweet pickle relish, sun-dried or roasted tomatoes and seaweed.
Add the imitation crab. Break or chop the imitation crab meat into smaller pieces before adding it to the bowl.
Season everything. Add the rosemary, dill, cilantro, dried mustard, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder and nutritional yeast.
Add the fun stuff. Sprinkle in your cinnamon and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Add the mustard. Mix in about 1 teaspoon of spicy or brown mustard.
Make it creamy. Add plain nonfat Greek yogurt and mayonnaise to your preferred level of creaminess. I recommend starting with less and adding more as needed—you can always make it creamier, but you can't un-add the yogurt. 😂
Add a squeeze of lemon juice. This helps brighten all those savory, creamy and slightly spicy flavors.
Mix everything together. Give the tuna salad a good stir until all of the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Taste and adjust. This is where you make the recipe yours. Add more mustard, relish, seasoning, lemon juice or whatever else you think it needs.
Add your jalapeño kettle chips. Crush or break them into bite-sized pieces and mix some into the tuna salad, then add more on top for extra crunch. If you're making the tuna salad ahead of time, I'd save the chips until you're ready to eat so they don't get soggy.
Serve and enjoy! Layer in a cup, alternating between your tuna salad and chips and stack/layer to your desire. Or scoop it up with extra jalapeño kettle chips.
My Foodie Thoughts
From a health perspective...
One of the things I like about this meal is that it's easy to build around protein while still making it feel like an actual meal—not a sad bowl of "healthy ingredients" that you're forcing yourself to eat.
Tuna, Greek yogurt, chickpeas and imitation crab all contribute protein, while chickpeas also provide fiber and additional substance.
I also like adding ingredients such as onion, tomatoes and seaweed because they bring different textures, flavors and nutrients to the bowl.
And then there are the kettle chips.
Let's be clear: the jalapeño kettle chips are here because they're delicious. 😂
Not every ingredient needs to be there because it has been awarded a gold star by the nutrition police.
Food is also supposed to be enjoyable.
For me, the chips add something important to the eating experience: crunch. And that contrast between the creamy tuna salad and crispy, spicy chips is part of what makes this recipe fun.
As always, your individual nutritional needs are going to vary. And because tuna can contain mercury, variety is important rather than relying on tuna as your everyday protein source. Variety is your friend.
From a cooking and foodie perspective...
This is where I have the most fun because tuna salad is one of those recipes you can creamy, crunchy, spicy, herby, tangy, or sweet. Again, you can use this recipe as a starting point rather than a strict set of commandments.
This is how I cook a lot of the time: I look at what I have. I think about what flavors might work together. I throw it in the bowl. And then I taste. Sometimes that means I discover a new favorite combination. Sometimes it means I learn that cinnamon and tuna probably need to have a serious conversation before their next meeting. 😂 Either way, that's part of the fun.
Make It Your Own
If you make this tuna salad, don't be afraid to customize it.
Try:
Diced celery for extra crunch
Pickles or relish for more tang
Red pepper flakes for some heat
Avocado for extra creaminess
Hard-boiled egg for even more protein
Fresh lemon juice for brightness
Mayo instead of—or mixed with—the Greek yogurt
Your favorite fresh herbs
That's the beauty of a meal like this. There is no one right way to make tuna salad. This is just my way, and if you try it, let me know what you changed! 😊
